Whether you're just doing some spring cleaning or a remodel, Long Electric hopes that you will continue your,"Green Living."
If you're just doing a spring cleaning, we suggest using "Green" or eco-friendly cleaning products. No more using bleach and pneumonia. When dumped down drains, these products are harmful to our environment. We suggest looking at your local retailers for "Green" cleaning products.
Clorox introduced a new line of cleaning products call Green Works. This line of products contains over 99% natural ingredients that are biodegradable. In additions to its natural ingredients, Green Works cleaners are not tested on animals and use recyclable packaging. So not only do you get the cleaning power of Clorox, but you're also helping better our environment by eliminating the harsh chemical residue that the usual household cleaners leave behind.
Remodels and renovations can be costly and damaging to our environment in many ways. When demoing out the old, our waste goes to landfills; which takes many years to break down. You can let your contractor know that you would like to recycle, reuse or donate as much material removed from you home as possible. Almost everything can be recycled or reused. For example, you can donate your old cabinets to Habitats for Humanity. What you may think is old and ugly; someone else can get use out of. If the cabinets are in too bad of shape for donation, you can recycle them by simply running them through a wood chipper; and reusing the chips in your yard.
The best way to remodel and renovate your home to be "Green" and eco-friendly is to purchase products that are energy efficient. GE and many other appliance manufacturers are working to better our environment by making refrigerators, dishwashers, washers and dryers, air conditioners and many more products that are energy efficient. These products save energy and water; but the best part is that they save you money on your water and electric bills. In addition to saving energy, water and money, many manufacturers are now offering cash rebates. For example, GE is currently offering a $100.00 rebate for purchasing two (2) select energy efficient products. But it gets even better! When you purchase three (3) select energy efficient products, you get $200.00 back. You can save up to $500.00 with GE. In some areas, you can also be eligible for utility rebates for purchasing energy efficient appliances. Check with your local utility company to see if you're eligible.
If you would like to go above and beyond the usual remodel or renovation, you could go as far as installing occupancy sensors. These sensors detect when there is movement in a room turning the lighting on. When there is no presence in the room, the sensors will turn off the lighting - saving you money on your utility bill. Occupancy sensors can run anywhere from $10.00-$30.00. While this cost is more than a usual switch would cost, the money you saved in a month on having the lights turned off would pay for the price difference.
